I have been writing about the Congeners on the Revised Scottish Whisky Flavour Wheel for some time now. And I am fully aware that there are lots of Tasting Wheels and Flavour Maps to be found online and in books.

Some time ago I was send some information by the Westland Distillery about their drams. In this information was one page that made my Year so to speak. In the booklet about the Westland Distillery was a new Flavour / Tasting Wheel.

Westland Distillery Booklet

This Flavour / Tasting Wheel is intended to describe the Flavours and Aroma’s typical for American Single Malt Whiskey. The booklet gives excellent information about the why of this specific tasting wheel. Information like:

“Like the production of our whiskey, our version of the Tasting Wheel is informed by tradition but re-imagined for the American Single Malt Whiskey category. Gone are the charming but perplexing descriptors such as “treacle” that you’ll find in the U.K., for instance. Added are entirely new categories such as Gourmand, which we’ve borrowed from the perfume industry.” ~ Westland Distillery, Booklet, 2017

The above information shows how there are three levels of descriptors on the American Single Malt Whiskey Flavour Wheel. I will eventually write all of them down for a complete overview and add it to this blog.

I asked the Distillery if I could add an image of the Wheel to this page and Chris replied that that would be “Totally fine” as long as I gave credit to the distillery.

I may or may not be tempted to make a new page detailing all these descriptor as well, just like I am doing for the Revised Scottish Whisky Flavour Wheel

The good thing is that this may provoke a new vocabulary for Whiskey drinkers to share notes with.
